Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Converts weapon activity into spell pressure
  • Highly customizable through gem 1 and mana-pool design
  • Can proc damage, healing, utility, or area effects
  • Combines well with high-DEX melee packages

Weaknesses

  • Exact combined DEX and mana-cost proc formula is unpublished
  • Poor gem choice can waste mana or reduce proc frequency
  • Requires both melee uptime and spell resources
  • Highly sensitive to balance changes and proc eligibility rules

Stances & Invocations

Only one stance and one invocation can be active at a time. The entries below are tactical modes to switch between, not simultaneous effects.

Priority Stances

Striker
Best for ability-heavy versions. In a Shadow Knight/Rogue/Wizard variant, Backstab and Reave receive the stance multiplier while lifetaps and Wizard direct damage fill their cooldowns.
Evasive
Rogue or Beastlord access lets a low-health Spellblade avoid attacks while lifetaps, heals, or control spells restore a safe health margin.
Offensive
The alternative for versions that spend most of their time autoattacking. It boosts weapon swings more directly but loses value when frequent casting replaces those swings.

Priority Invocations

Spellblade
The defining invocation: select an eligible gem-one spell that matches the encounter—lifetap for sustain, stun or hate for tanking, or direct damage for burst.
Arcane Mastery
Shadow Knight plus Intelligence-caster variants accelerate lifetaps, DoTs, and direct damage between proc and combat-skill events.
Divine
Paladin, Ranger, or Beastlord variants can turn ordinary Mana spending into passive healing when survival matters more than raw proc damage.

Play Pattern

  1. Choose gem 1 by expected value per proc, not raw spell magnitude.
  2. Sustain weapon contact and use a stance that supports the actual trigger cadence.
  3. Swap away from Spellblade when mana/endurance efficiency falls below a direct-casting or recovery plan.

Synergies

These interactions focus on combinations that increase damage uptime, casts per minute, combat-skill throughput, or effective DPS by reducing time spent recovering.

Ability-proc-cast loop

Striker amplifies Backstab, Reave, Smite, Frenzy, or kicks; Spellblade adds proc events; manual spells fill ability cooldowns. The three layers overlap without requiring one continuous autoattack-only rotation.

SHD/ROG/WIZ example

Use Striker for Backstab and Reave, cast lifetaps and Wizard direct damage while those skills recover, and switch to Evasive at low health to create a lifetap recovery window.

Offensive comparison

Offensive is better when most time remains on weapon swings. Striker is better when high-damage abilities and frequent spells dominate the action schedule.

Proc selection

Fast weapons and DEX increase expected trigger opportunities; the best gem-one spell depends on whether the encounter needs damage, sustain, stun, or hate.

Tooltip mechanics and official patch changes are T1 or T2 where documented. Build-performance conclusions and community-tested interaction priorities remain T3 and balance-sensitive.

Attribute & Equipment Priorities

Ratio is only one weapon criterion. Proc effect, proc level, DEX, damage bonus, required positioning, shield value, and resource demands can make a lower-ratio weapon the better encounter choice.

Confidence Boundary

The mechanical components referenced by this page may be T1 or T2, but the recommendation that they form a strong build is T3. Balance patches, new items, encounter design, and better parse data can change the preferred exact trio without invalidating the broader archetype.
